Is Richard a "Bad Boy"
Richard, the main character of the book Black Boy, is really not a bad boy even though he does many bad things. He is not really a bad boy because he is a product of his environment. He lived in the slums of Memphis and there was nothing to do but for him to wander around and explore. Most of the time he gets in trouble he is just being curious, like the saloon, and he is not meaning to do bad things he is just trying to "learn." Another reason why he does bad things not purposely is because of his family. His father is a night time worker and he cannot make noise in the daytime when he sleeps, so he wanders off and is being curious and getting himself in trouble. His father doesn't treat Richard particularly well so Richard sometimes does bad things, like killing the cat, to get on his fathers nerves and prove to him that he is better than him when he said to kill the cat sarcastically. Behavior should be blamed on the person if they are making the same mistake, or similar ones, over and over again. If someone makes it once then you can assume that they did it because of their environment. It should also be blamed on the environment if they are in a bad one and they are doing bad things. I think that this book is OK so far.

Interesting, so do you think that Richard WILL learn from his mistakes? Watch to see if you feel that he is repeating the negative behavior.
Yes I think that richard WILL learn from his mistakes
I think you make many good points. I really liked your point about how its Richard's curiosity that gets him into trouble. I think that it is good that Richard is curious, but like you said, his environment has a negative effect.
